Nice inderlighed.’

Our 52-acre Staete Landt vineyard is situated on the ‘Golden Mile’ in the Rapaura sub-region of Marlborough. The 6 parcels of Sauvignon Blanc we have on this vineyard each provide a unique expression; delivering a range of intense and vibrant flavours.

The 2017 growing season started off relatively cold and wet, setting us up for a smaller but high quality harvest. Luckily we then had a warm and dry summer but still with quite less fruit than previous years. A small amount of leaf removal was carried out to get optimal sun exposure on the fruit and air movement through the canopy. The 2018 vintage gave us beautiful clean fruit with optimum physiological ripeness, classy crispness and great intensity of flavors.

We always harvest each parcel of Sauvignon Blanc separately, providing us with an array of different flavours and structure. The first picks with their hallmark Marlborough herbaciousness and crisp acidity combine elegantly with the concentrated rich tropical fruit of the later picks.

Just as we treat each parcel differently in the vineyard, we also handle the fruit differently in the winery for the ‘Annabel’ Sauvignon Blanc. The various Estate parcels were fermented using various yeast strains in order to emphasize the differences in fruit flavours and aromas. We selected 1 parcel to age on full lees in tank for 5 months. We also selected a parcel to mature in an oak (2,500L) tank to sit on lees for the same period. During this time we allowed these 2 ‘leesy’ components to develop a subtle but complex creaminess to the wine.
On top if that a substantial percentage of this wine was fermented in 6 – 10 year old barriques, with a mixture of cultured and ‘wild’ yeast. Due to the individual fermentation process in each of these old barrel vessels great complexity and layers to the wine are built.
